* WHAT TECHNIQUES ARE YOU USING?

I work with a digital camera (D70) Nikon with various objectives. I have created my own lighting techniques with an infrared-portable flashlight.
My studio equipement consists of 3 Godard torches with large softboxes.

* HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR SELFPORTRAITS?

Since years and years I work with the same assistant. I educated him in photography techniques, specific for my style. He helps me positioning the lights
on outdoor locations and assists me during many shoots. We discuss ideas often together.

* DO YOU RE-ARRANGE YOUR IMAGES DIGITALLY?

I correct my photos on colour and contrast. My photographs have to express a certain feeling and that can be created with the use of texture or other images to blend in with the original photo.
The most important is that the whole composition is beautiful in all aspects.

* CAN I PUT SOME OF YOUR PICTURES ON MY WEBSITE?

You can do if you ask permission by e-mail.

* CAN WE DO AN EXCHANGE OF LINKS?

Not yet, but I have had pictures published in various magazines such as Astan Magazin (de), Dark Spy (de), Gothic (de), Karfunkel (de), Fiend (au), Uit (be).
My work is also often used for posters and flyers.
I have my own set of postcards (3 sets). You can order them over my shop.

* DO YOU MAKE YOUR CLOTHES YOURSELF ?

Most of the clothes in my pictures are made or designed by me.
I also have a lot of antique gowns and vintage clothes.
Some of my modells do make their clothes themselves as well.

* WHO IS DOING THE STYLING OF YOUR MODELS?

In most of the cases I take care of the make up and hairstyle, clothes and accesoires of the model.
Sometimes I work with a make up artist.

* CAN I BE YOUR MODEL?

I always choose my models myself... If you live in the near of Belgium or wish to travel there for a photo shoot, you can write me and I'll let you know my fees for a session.

* CAN I REQUEST A PHOTOSESSION?

Ofcourse you can. You can send me an e-mail to make an appointment. We will discuss the planning, location and style of the shooting together.
You pay a fixed price.
This price includes:
- the styling,
- if requested the use of my private costumes,
- the professional shoot,
- a cd with a selection of the best photographs on a high resolution for your own use
- a selection of the best photographs printed on photopaper in a 10*15cm and 13*18cm format.

* HOW MUCH DOES IT COST IF I WANT TO BUY A PICTURE?

Depending on whether the picture is printed as a limited edition or not, the price ranges from 100 € up to 250 € for a 30*40cm print on high quality photopaper.
Larger pictures can be made on request.

Biography It is kind of weird to write my own biography since I am only 23 years old. Maybe I’ll start with what brought me to photography. After school, aged 18 years, I was really aimless. I grew up in my own fantasy world, between pink and black ballet tutu’s, cute white ponies and lots of princess'gowns. The time I had, I spent dressing up like a doll and having chocolate and cake in my homecity Antwerpen together with my girlfriends. We were dramaqueens concerning boys and we decided that boys are hopeless and probably not very smart. So days passed by, drinking tea, walking through the old museums, drawing, dreaming...and then suddenly the summerholidays were over and I had to decide what I wanted to do with my life. Frankly I was too young to know what I wanted to do with my life... I just wanted to play. So one of my friends came up with the idea to study photography. I joined her idea but was not really interested in photography though. My father was in former times very busy with photography, and he had a complete equipment of nice Olympus camera’s. That gave me a little comfort to start the education. My father would be always there to help me. After 2 months of college, my friend quitted and some 3 years later I was the proud owner of a paper that says that I am a Master in Photography! How nice! So now I was ready for the real world? I would say, no.. In that time I had learned some techniques you would never use in real life. Interesting but not necessary. I could develop my own films and make my own colour prints in real big sizes...whoohoo... But during these 3 years I started to get a very high affection with portrait photograhy, and also with “freaks”. I would call my thesis “Reflective Freak / Freak Reflection” and I had a real good point for that title. (which you can read further on on my website). By that time I was mainly portraiting gothic people. The funny thing about this was that my gothic models wanted to have this very creepy image, to shock people and to scare them...but in my pictures they looked like innocent children. I could somehow reflect my inner emotion in their face. And that’s what I still do. I use my models as mirror. They give me their person, and I give them my emotions. You could ask what my pictures are reflecting actually. They absolutely do not reflect reality. (That’s the last thing I would like to show to be honest.) They reflect some kind of dreamworld where everybody is pretty and where life is magical. I make a lot of effort to get the right make up and clothes. That’s why I also do every aspect of my picture myself. I search a location, a model, I do the make up and hairstyle and I make the clothes. Every detail is important, and often you dont see anything but a glance from the background and the clothes but the feeling that my models get by wearing these dresses and being in these great surrounding, gives me the opportunity to create the right expression and emotion in their face. Another aspect from my photography are my selfportraits. I was always surprised and shocked by my own reflection. Anytime I look in the mirror, I see another “myself”. In my mind I never look the same and that scares me! So one day I got the idea to photograph all the aspects I thought to see in myself. To see the change, maybe to see some evolution or maybe to make sure that I am looking quite the same on every picture? I dont really know. But I found it an interesting project, and I enjoy it still. Modeling myself gives me also a very close idea how to talk to my own models. I can explain them very detailed how they should stand, keep their head and get a certain look in the eyes. They just have to follow my voice while I take the pictures. People often say that art should be shocking to be good. I dont share that opinion. Great examples for me are mostly old and romantic paintings, paintings that keep a dream, a secret or a mysterious kind of beauty. And that’s just what I try to do... I want to create and show beauty, sometimes a dream, sometimes a fantasy, sometimes romantic, sometimes little nasty. Through my photographs I cherish the hope to share some beauty with other people, to open their eyes for their own inner worlds... With love, *viona*

(English Version) Right from the start when I came in contact with photography, my fascination for people in images was very clear. It is important for me not to name the exact nature of photography, an image attracts me, when it stirrs my feelings. A certain pose, an expression on a face, an almost invisible detail can push up a picture high above the mass of visuality. reflective: meditative, in thoughts * reflection: mirror image, blame, consideration, meditation, the thought * reflexion: reflection * freak: rare bird reflective freak/ freak reflection In this project, reflection is the key word. Reflection in the meaning to think as to reflect, to „cast“ a reflection. The pictures are showing persons, who are often condemned as “freaks” in our modern society: they do not look common, they jump out of the rows. On the other hand it means that it is me, also a freak, who is casting a reflection from myself on my models, both on their inside worlds and their outside appearances. In their presence, their outlook, the look in their eyes and in their expression I project what I want to show in the final picture. I express myself in manipulating my models, I express myself through my photographs. Through my portraits I also try to protest against the term „freak“ who gets a very negative meaning in our society. Following my way of thinking, a freak is somebody who goes very deep into a certain subject, trying to perfect himself. This can contain the most deep philosophic theories and their applications until collecting pure material possesions. Because of his interest and will to go on, a freak reaches a high grade of knowledge and skills. He will go on till he has reached his pre-setted goals there were the modal citizen will quit his efforts quite easily. Like this I come to the conclusion that “freak” only has positive charachteristics!Gothic ”Gothic” has a very big influence on my life and work. The largest part of my photographs are in this gothic-style, and mostly, the portrayed people are also close or even into the gothic scene. Gothic Precisely because I often get the question: “ What is now actually gothic?” I ‘d like to give an answer. There is no definition for the word “gothic”. Gothic has its own meaning for everyone and it would be unfair to explain it in one word or sentence. Gothic is a lifestyle, or better: a way of life. There are many preconceptions about gothic, probably because it is not so well known and “goths” often look different than the “normal” man. There are even many stories going around about gothic: gothic is satanism, gothic is vampirism, or even better: gothic is SM! Of course all this is not correct, most goths are persons who are standing with both feet on the ground and they do not like these childish stories. Many people think that death and vampires are also related to gothic and that’s not so strange: the vampire and horror stories were created in the 18th century, in the golden times of early gothic. What absolutely fits to gothic, is the colour black. You find it mainly in their clothes, who are often very eccentric and stylish. But not all goths are always dressed in black, there are many different sub styles of gothic, like for example “glamgoth (glamour) where the use of colour is very extreme. Gothic is nowadays made to a fashion style, mainly because of the commercialisation from the style for the normal people. Everybody can buy a complete gothic outfit just around the corner by H&M. In former times the style of clothing was an outing from the creativity of the individual. Mostly, the clothes where self designed and self made, now there are everywhere shops, specialised in gothic clothes and all imaginable accessories. Though, nowadays people appreciate it more when somebody wears his self made outfit, I mean, everybody can “buy” an outfit and it is so much more creative to design your own things than to spend an enormous amount of money for a pre-fabricated uniform. Like you can see, gothic is a very visual thing, the clothes, juwellery, accessories and make-up are of great importance for the image of the person. Nowadays, the biggest gothic scene can be found in Germany. I will state the example of the gigantic Wave und Gotik Treffen, the biggest goth festival in the world which is organised in Leipzig every year.

Construction of the images In my portraits you will find some always-returning visual elements both in the outlook of the models as in the clothes. Here you can read why those elements are always there in all my photographs. Fascination for the past The past has fascinated me from my childhood on. History always seemed very romantic to me and I have always found it a pitty that it is impossible to life and experience these other periods. Realism, that is often found in photography has never been my aim. I do not wish to show reality, in contrary, I try to show something magical, something from a long time ago. Something that makes you think and brings you far away in another world, my world. The un-modern and un-realistic is a factor in all my pictures. Often they are called “classic”, maybe it is partly true, but as well because they don’t show young people, longing for history, for former times. Fascination for people People like to look at other people, that is a fact. People also like to look at images of other people… I always found a portrait or a person in a picture more interesting than anything else. A face can tell so much, it can lead you to reflection, to see stories and fantasies behind the substance of the picture. Combination between nowadays and past When looking at my pictures, you would not call them “modern”, they do not show an image of the true reality, which is from this time, but they show a selection of people who do not wish to be modern. Dressed in gowns, inspired on designs from history, they sometimes stand a little misfitting in a modern surrounding. Expression and pose This is a very fragile point, a very dominant factor in the make or break of a picture. It is here that I ask myself….do I make a portrait of the person in front of me, or do I make a portrait of myself in the body of the model? The answer is very clear to me now: The portraits themselves ask a question to the viewer. The eyes ask you, uncertain, what am I doing right here and is this all right, am I sure about what I am doing, and who the hell am I?!

(Nederlandse versie) Vanaf het begin dat ik in contact kwam met fotografie, is m’n fascinatie voor de menselijke aanwezigheid in een beeld duidelijk geworden. Voor mij is het dan ook niet van belang de aard van de fotografie nauwkeurig te gaan bepalen, een beeld spreekt me aan wanneer het iets in mezelf teweegbrengt. Een houding, een uitdrukking op een gezicht, een onopgemerkt detail kan een foto voor mij uit de massa verheffen. * reflective: nadenkend, peinzend * reflection: weerschijen, spiegel-beeld, blaam, overdenking, nadenken, de gedachte * reflexion: reflection * freak: rariteit reflective freak/ freak reflection Bij dit project gaat het eigenlijk om reflectie, zowel in de zin van na te denken als van te reflecteren, te weerspiegelen. De foto’s tonen personen, die in de hedendaagse maatschappij vaak als “freaks” worden bestempeld: ze zijn niet alledaags, ze springen uit de massa. Anderszijds het erop wijzen dat ik het ben, evenals een freak, die een reflectie van mezelf, zowel op innerlijk als uiterlijk vlak, op mijn modellen overdraag. In hun aanwezigheid, hun uiterlijk, de blik in hun ogen en hun expressie leg ik datgene wat ik tot uitdrukking wil brengen in de uiteindelijke foto. Ik druk me uit via anderen, druk me uit via mijn foto’s. Met mijn portretten wil ik ook protesteren tegen de negatieve geladenheid dat het begrip “freak” door onze conventionele maatschappij krijgt opgedrongen. Volgens mijn visie is een freak iemand die zich verdiept in een onderwerp en zich daarin tracht te perfectioneren. Dit kan gaan van de meest filosofische theorieën en hun toepassingen tot puur materiële bezittingen. Door zijn interesse en gedrevenheid bereikt een freak een hoge graad van kennis en kunde. Hij zal ook doorzetten tot hij zijn beoogde doel heeft bereikt daar waar de modale burger vrij vlug zijn inspanningen opgeeft. Zo kom ik tot de conclusie dat “freak” alleen maar positieve karaktertrekken inhoudt! Gothic "Gothic" heeft een zeer grote invloed op mijn leven en werk. De meeste van mijn foto’s zijn onder te brengen onder de gothic-stijl, en veelal zijn de geportretteerde personen ook mensen die nauw verbonden zijn met de stijl of scene. Ook omdat ik regelmatig de vraag krijg: “wat is nu eigenlijk gothic?”, wil ik daarop een antwoord geven. Er bestaat geen definitie voor het woord "gothic". Gothic heeft voor iedereen een eigen betekenis, en is niet samen te vatten in 1 woord of zin. Gothic is een levensstijl, dit is te merken aan de manier hoe je je gedraagt, hoe je je kleed, hoe je in het leven staat... Er zijn heel wat vooroordelen over gothic, dit komt waarschijnlijk omdat er vrij weinig over bekend is en goths er vaak anders uitzien dan de "gemiddelde" mens. Ook gaan er veel fabels rond: gothic is satanisme, gothic is vampirisme, en nog sterker: gothic is sm! Natuurlijk is dat allemaal niet waar, de meeste goths staan juist met beide benen op de grond en hebben een grondige hekel aan al deze vooroordelen. Veel mensen denken dat dood en vampieren ook te maken heeft met gothic. Dat is eigenlijk niet zo vreemd, de vampier en de horrorverhalen zijn ontstaan in de 18e eeuw, in de tijd dat de vroege gothic hoogtijdagen vierde. Wat absoluut wel bij gothic hoort is de kleur zwart. Dat vind je overal in terug. Vooral in de kleding, die vaak erg apart en stijlvol is. Maar goths zijn niet altijd gekleed in zwart, er bestaan namelijk ongeloofelijk veel afsplistingen van de gothic stijl, zoals “glamgoth(glamour)” waar het gebruik van kleur dan weer extreem is. “Gothic” is tegenwoordig een modestijl geworden, mede door de commercialisatie en uitbuiting van de stijl bij het “gewone publiek”. Zo kan je zonder problemen tegenwoordig een hele gothic outfit samenstellen door simpelweg een bezoekje te brengen bij H&M. Vroeger werd de kledingstijl gekenmerkt door de creativiteit van het individu. Veelal werd de kledij zelf ontworpen en gemaakt, nu zijn er gespecialiseerde zaken die enkel in gothic kledij doen. Toch wordt het des te meer op prijs gesteld wanneer iemand met iets zelfgemaakt uitpakt dan wanneer hij of zij gewoon een enorm bedrag geld heeft gespendeerd voor een geprefabriceerd tenue. Daarom is gothic een heel visueel iets, de kledij, juwelen, accesoires en make- up zijn van groot belang voor het voorkomen en imago van het individu. Tegenwoordig kan de grootste gotische cultuur gevonden worden in Duitsland hetgeen aangetoont wordt door het gigantische "Wave Gotik Treffen" in Leipzig.

Opbouw van de beelden In mijn portretten zijn telkens een aantal terugkerende kenmerken zichtbaar zowel in het uiterlijk van de modellen als in de kledij. Hieronder kan je lezen waarom juist die elementen steeds aanwezig zijn in al m'n beelden. Fascinatie voor het verleden Het verleden heeft me van kindsaf aan gefascineerd. Ik heb het me altijd heel romantisch voorgesteld, en heb het altijd jammer gevonden dat het niet meer mogelijk is om die andere tijdsperioden zelf mee te maken en te beleven. Het realisme dat veelal terug te vinden is in fotografie was nooit mijn doel geweest om te gaan fotograferen. Ik wil niet de werkelijkheid tonen, maar in tegendeel, de kijker iets magisch van vroeger tonen. Iets dat doet denken aan alles, maar niet aan nu. Het onhedendaagse en onrealisme is een kenmerk voor m’n foto’s. Veelal worden mijn beelden als “klassiek” bestempeld, wat mischien gedeeltelijk ook zo is hoewel ze iets tonen wat alles behalve klassiek is: ze tonen jonge mensen die verlangen naar oudheid, naar vroeger. Op die manier is de fascinatie voor vroeger niet enkel bij mij aanwezig, maar ook bij de geportretteerden. Aantrekkingskracht van de mens Mensen kijken graag naar andere mensen, dat is een feit. Mensen kijken ook graag naar afbeeldingen van andere mensen... Dat geldt voor mij ook, en ikzelf heb de menselijke aanwezigheid in een foto ook steeds interessanter gevonden dan wat dan ook. Een gezicht kan zo veel vertellen, het kan aanzetten tot zo’n diepe gedachten, verhalen en fantasieën. Ik heb dan ook zonder twijfel voor de mens gekozen als hoofdthema voor dit werk, en meer bepaald voor het portret van jonge mensen met een welbepaald karakter en eigen verhaal. Combinatie tussen heden en verleden Als men naar m’n foto’s kijkt kan men niet zeggen dat ze “modern” zijn, ze zijn niet hedendaags, tonen geen beeld van de werkelijke realiteit die op dit moment gangbaar is maar ze laten een selectie mensen zien die allesbehalve hedendaags wensen te zijn. Gekleed in jurken, geïnspireerd op ontwerpen uit de geschiedenis, staan ze soms een beetje wereldvreemd in een moderne omgeving. Uitdrukking en houding Dit is een teer punt, een zeer bepalend gegeven voor het al dan niet slagen van een foto. Het is in dit onderwerp dat ik de vraag stel aan mezelf... maak ik nu eigenlijk een portret van diegene die hier voor me staat, of maak ik een portret van mezelf in het lichaam van het model? Het antwoord is me sinds korte tijd duidelijk: de portretten zelf stellen de kijker een vraag. De ogen vragen je, onzeker, wat doe ik hier en is dit wel in orde allemaal, ben ik wel zeker van wat ik doe, wie in hemelsnaam ben ik?

 

(Deutsche Version) Vom ersten Moment an, als ich mit der Fotografie in Kontakt kam, ist meine Faszination für die Anwesenheit des Menschen in einem Bild deutlich geworden. So ist es mir auch nicht wichtig die Art der Fotografie genau zu bestimmen - ein Bild spricht mich an, wenn es etwas in mir bewegt. Eine Haltung, der Ausdruck eines Gesichts, ein unbemerktes Detail kann ein Foto für mich aus der Menge hervorheben. * reflective: nachdenklich, sinnend * reflection: Widerschein, Spiegelbild, Tadel, Überlegung, Nachdenken, der Gedanke * reflexion: Zurückstrahlung * freak: eine Rarität reflective freak/ freak reflection Bei dem Projekt geht es eigentlich um Reflexion, in der Bedeutung über etwas nachzudenken, aber auch etwas zu reflektieren, widerzuspiegeln. Die Fotos zeigen Personen, die in der heutigen Gesellschaft häufig als "Freaks" bezeichnet werden: Sie sind nicht alltäglich, sie heben sich von der Masse ab. Andererseits übertrage ich mein Wesen, ein ebensolcher Freak zu sein - im Inneren, wie auch im Äußeren - als Reflexion meiner selbst auf meine Modelle. In ihre Anwesenheit, ihr Äußeres, in den Blick ihrer Augen und ihre Expression lege ich das, was ich in dem endgültigen Foto zum Ausdruck bringen will. Ich erkläre mich selbst durch andere, spreche durch meine Bilder. Mit meinen Portraits will ich auch gegen die negative Bedeutung protestieren, die dem Begriff "Freak" durch unsere konventionelle Gesellschaft aufgezwängt wurde. Meiner Ansicht nach ist ein Freak jemand, der sich in eine Anschauung vertieft und versucht sich darin zu perfektionieren. Das kann von den größten philosophischen Theorien und ihren Anwendungen bis zu rein materiellen Gütern reichen. Durch sein Interesse und seine Getriebenheit erreicht der Freak ein hohes Maß an Kenntnis und Wissen. Er wird auch durchhalten bis er sein beabsichtigtes Ziel erreicht hat, dort wo der modale Bürger ziemlich schnell seine Anstrengungen aufgibt. So komme ich zu dem Schluss, dass ein "Freak" doch viel mehr positive Charakterzüge inne hat. Gothic "Gothic" hat einen sehr großen Einfluss auf mein Leben und mein Werk. Die meisten meiner Bilder sind dem Gothic-Stil verhaftet und nur zu oft sind die portraitierten Personen auch Menschen, die sich eng mit der Lebensweise der Szene verbunden fühlen. Gerade weil ich regelmäßig gefragt werde: "Was Gothic nun eigentlich ist?", will ich darauf eine Antwort geben. Eine präzise Definition für das Wort "Gothic" gibt es nicht. Gothic hat für jeden eine andere Bedeutung und man kann es nicht in einem Wort oder Satz zusammenfassen. Gothic ist ein Lebensstil, der sich in der Weise zeigt wie du dich benimmst, wie du dich kleidest, wie du im Leben stehst... Es gibt sehr viele Vorurteile über die Gothic-Szene; das kommt wahrscheinlich daher, weil recht wenig darüber bekannt ist und Gruftis oft anders aussehen als der "durchschnittliche" Passant. Dazu sind noch viele Märchen im Umlauf: Gothic ist Satanismus, Gothic ist Vampirismus oder eben noch ärger: Gothic ist SM! Natürlich entspricht das überhaupt nicht den Tatsachen, die meisten Gruftis stehen mit beiden Beinen auf dem Boden und hegen einen gründlichen Widerwillen gegen all diese Vorurteile. Viele Menschen glauben, dass Tod und Vampire auch etwas mit Gothic zu tun haben. Das ist eigentlich nicht verwunderlich; der Vampir und die Horrorgeschichten sind im 18. Jahrhundert entstanden, in der Zeit als die frühe Gothic ihre Blüte erlebte. Was absolut sicher zum Gothic-Stil gehört ist die Farbe Schwarz. Sie ist überall wieder zu finden. Vor allem in der Kleidung, die oft sehr ausgefallen und stilvoll ist. Aber Gruftis sind nicht die ganze Zeit in Schwarz gekleidet, es gibt nämlich unglaublich viele Abspaltungen vom klassischen Gothic-Stil, wie die "Glamgoths" (von "glamoure"), bei denen das Tragen von Farben wiederum extrem wichtig ist. "Gothic" ist gegenwärtig ein Modestil geworden, mit durch die Vermarktung und Ausbeutung dieses Stils durch die "gewöhnliche Öffentlichkeit." So kannst du dir zur Zeit ohne Probleme ein komplettes Gothic-Outfit einfach durch einen Besuch bei H&M zusammenstellen. Früher war der Kleidungsstil gekennzeichnet durch die Kreativität des Individuums. Meist wurde die Kleidung selbst entworfen und auch selbst angefertigt. Heute gibt es spezialisierte Geschäfte die ausschließlich Gothic-Kleidung verkaufen. Doch wird es desto mehr geschätzt, wenn jemand mit etwas Selbstgemachten loslegt, als wenn er oder sie, wie gewöhnlich, einen enormen Geldbetrag für eine fabrikneue Uniform gespendet hat. Deswegen ist Gothic ein sehr visuelles Etwas; die Kleider, der Schmuck, die Accessoires und das Make-up sind von großer Wichtigkeit für die äußere Erscheinung und für das Imago des Einzelnen. Zur Zeit kann man die größte Enklave der gotischen Kultur in Deutschland finden, was durch das gigantische "Wave- und Gotik- Treffen" in Leipzig gut zum Ausdruck kommt.

Der Aufbau meiner Bilder In meinen Portraits sind jedes Mal ein Anteil wiederkehrender Merkmale sichtbar, sowohl im Aussehen der Modelle, als auch in ihrer Kleidung. Hier kannst du nun erfahren warum gerade diese Elemente stets in allen Bildern vorhanden sind. Die Faszination für das Vergangene Die Vergangenheit hat mich von Kindheit an fasziniert. Ich habe es mir immer sehr romantisch vorgestellt und fand es immer Schade, dass es nicht mehr möglich ist andere Zeitalter mitzumachen und selbst zu erleben. Der übliche Realismus, der heute so oft in der Fotografie zu finden ist, war niemals mein Ziel gewesen um Bilder zu machen. Ich möchte nicht die Wirklichkeit zeigen, sondern ganz im Gegenteil den Betrachter etwas Magisches aus einer vergangenen Zeit vorführen. Etwas, das an alles denken lässt, nur nicht an das Jetzt. Das Unzeitgemäße und das Unrealistische ist ein Kennzeichen all meiner Fotografien. Häufig wurden meine Bilder als "klassisch" bezeichnet, was zum Teil vielleicht auch stimmt, wiewohl sie etwas zeigen, das ausgesprochen klassisch ist: Sie zeigen junge Menschen, die ein Verlangen nach der alten Zeit, nach früher, in sich tragen. Auf diese Weise ist die Faszination für früher nicht nur bei mir vorhanden, sondern auch bei den Portraitierten. Die Anziehungskraft des Menschen Menschen schauen recht gern nach anderen Menschen, das ist eine Tatsache. Menschen betrachten sich auch gerne Abbildungen anderer Menschen... Das gilt auch für mich und ich selbst habe die Anwesenheit von Menschen in einem Foto auch stets interessanter gefunden als alles andere. Ein Gesicht kann so viel erzählen, es kann anregen zu solch tiefen Gedanken, Geschichten und Fantasien. Ich habe mich dann auch ohne Zweifel für den Menschen als Hauptthema für dieses Werk entschieden und mehr noch für das Portrait von jungen Menschen mit einem ausgeprägten Charakter und eigener Geschichte. Die Kombination zwischen Heute und Gestern Wenn man sich meine Bilder betrachtet kann man nicht sagen, dass sie "modern" sind; sie sind nicht zeitgenössisch, zeigen kein Bild der wirklichen Realität, die in diesem Moment gültig ist; sie lassen vielmehr eine Auswahl von Menschen erkennen, die es überhaupt nicht wünschen zeitgemäß zu sein. Angetan mit Kleidern, die inspiriert sind durch Vorlagen aus der Geschichte, stehen sie zuweilen ein wenig weltfremd in einer modernen Umgebung. Ausdruck und Haltung Das ist ein sensibler Punkt, eine sehr heikle Aufgabe für Erfolg oder Nichterfolg einer Aufnahme. Es liegt in der Natur der Sache, dass ich an mich selber die Frage stelle... mach‚ ich nun eigentlich ein Portrait von der Person, die vor mir steht oder mach‚ ich ein Portrait von mir selbst im Körper des Modells? Die Antwort ist mir seit kurzer Zeit klar: Die Portraits selber stellen den Betrachter eine Frage. Die Augen fragen dich, unsicher, was tue ich hier und ist das so auch alles in Ordnung, bin ich mir sicher was ich tue, wer in Himmels Namen bin ich?

(Version Française) (thanks to Ulrika!!!) Biographie Il est étrange d’écrire ma biographie alors que j'ai seulement 23 ans. Peut-être devrais-je commencer par ce qui m’a conduit à la photographie. Après l'école, à l’age de 18 ans, j'étais vraiment « sans but ». Ayant grandi dans mon propre monde de fantaisie, entre le tutu de ballet rose et noir, les mignons poneys blancs et les robes de princesse ;  mon temps libre était surtout consacré à m’habiller comme une poupée et à goûter, chocolat chaud et gâteaux avec mes amies, dans ma ville natale d’Anvers.Nous jouions les « Reines troublées » concernant les garçons et nous avions décidé qu’ils  étaient des cas  désespérés, probablement pas très intelligents… Ainsi les jours passaient, buvant le thé, marchant dans les vieux musés, dessinant, rêvant ... lorsque soudain les vacances d’été se finirent. Je devais décider de ce que j’allais faire de ma vie. Franchement j'étais trop jeune pour savoir quoi faire... je voulais juste jouer. Donc, lorsqu’une de mes amies avança l'idée d'étudier la photographie, Je la suivis… Bien que peu intéressée par le sujet. A cette époque, mon père travaillait dans le monde de la photographie et il avait un très bon équipement complet de caméra Olympus. Cela me procura un certain confort pour commencer mes études. De plus, mon père serait toujours là  pour  m'aider. Après 2 mois de cours, mon amie laissa tomber et environ 3 ans plus tard j'étais l’heureuse propriétaire d'un papier, disant que j’étais diplômée en Photographie! Magnifique! Maintenant, j’étais donc prête à me lancer dans le monde réel ? Je dirais, non. J'avais appris quelques techniques qu’on n’utilise presque jamais dans la vie réelle. Intéressant certes, mais pas nécessaire. Je pourrais développer mes propres négatifs et faire mes propres tirages couleurs en grands formats… whoohoo…. Mais pendant ces 3 ans j'ai commencé à avoir une affection particulière pour le portrait photographique et pour les « freaks » (phénomènes). J'appelai ma thèse " Phénomènes réfléchissants / la Réflexion Anormale " Et j'eus de  très bons points pour ce titre. (Explication à lire plus loin sur  mon site Web). À ce moment-là je tirais principalement le portrait des gothiques. L’anecdote amusante est que mes modèles gothiques voulaient montrer une image sombre d’eux même, pour choquer et effrayer les gens…..Mais dans mes photos ils ressortaient comme  d’innocents enfants. C’était comme si, d’une façon ou d’une autre, je pouvais refléter mes propres émotions sur leurs visages. Et c’est ce que je continue de faire. J'emploie mes modèles comme un miroir. Ils me donnent leur personne, et je leur donne mes émotions. Vous pourriez me demander ce que mes photos reflètent réellement. Elles ne reflètent absolument pas la réalité. (Pour être honnête, c’est la dernière chose je voudrais montrer.) Elles reflètent un certain genre de Monde Imaginaire où tout le monde est beau et où la vie est magique. Je fais beaucoup d'efforts pour obtenir le bon maquillage et les bons vêtements. C'est pourquoi je travaille moi-même sur chaque aspect de ma photographie. Je recherche un endroit, un modèle, je le maquille, le coiffe et je réalise aussi les vêtements. Chaque détail est important. Et si souvent vous ne le percevez pas,  le décor, les vêtements et le sentiment  que ceux-ci procurent aux modèles, me donne l'occasion de créer la bonne expression et émotion dans leurs visages.

Un autre aspect de mon travail est l’Autoportrait. J'ai toujours été étonnée et choquée par mon propre reflet. Lorsque je me regarde dans le miroir, je vois des autres "moi-même". Dans mon esprit je ne vois jamais la même chose et cela m’effraie! Alors un jour j'ai eu l'idée de photographier chaque nouvel aspect de moi-même. Pour voir le changement, peut-être aussi pour voir l'évolution ou  simplement pour m'assurer que mon image est a peu près la même sur chaque photo? Je ne sais pas vraiment. Mais j’ai trouvé ce projet intéressant, et je l'apprécie toujours. Poser moi-même me donne également une idée très précise de comment parler avec mes propres modèles. Je peux leurs expliquer en détails la manière dont ils devraient se tenir, garder leur tête et avoir un certain regard dans les yeux. Ils doivent juste suivre ma voix tandis que je prends les photos. Les gens disent souvent que l'art devrait choquer pour être bon. Je ne partage pas cette opinion. Les meilleurs exemples pour moi sont les peintures anciennes, romantiques, ces peintures qui gardent un rêve, un secret ou un genre mystérieux de beauté. C'est un peu ce que j'essaye de représenter... Je veux créer et montrer la beauté.. Parfois un rêve, parfois une imagination, parfois romantique, parfois un peu méchant… Par mes photographies j'ai l'espoir de partager une certaine beauté avec d'autres, pour ouvrir leurs yeux afin qu’ils découvrent leurs propres mondes intérieurs... Dès le début lorsque je suis entrée en contact avec la photographie, ma fascination pour les gens "mis en images" était très claire. Il est important pour moi de ne pas nommer la nature exacte de photographie, une image m'attire, quand elle  m’émeut. Une certaine pose, une expression sur un visage, un détail presque invisible, peuvent faire aboutir une image, la distinguer d’une  masse visuelle. Réfléchissant (Réfléchi) : méditatif, dans ses pensées * réflexion : image inversée, blâme, considération, méditation, la pensée * réflexion : réflection * Freak (phénomène) : oiseau rare La réflexion des "Freaks - phénomènes" / "Freaks - Phénomènes" réfléchissants Dans ce projet, réflexion est le mot clef. La réflexion est ici présentée dans le sens de penser, refléter, de "jeter/poser" une réflexion. Mes images montrent des personnes, qui sont souvent présentées comme des "Phénomènes de foire" dans notre société moderne : ils ne semblent pas communs, ils sortent des rangs. D'autre part ce projet signifie que c’est moi, aussi "Freak - phénomène", qui jette un reflet de moi-même sur mes modèles, tant sur leurs mondes intérieurs que sur leurs apparences extérieures. Dans leur présence, leur apparence, leur regard et leur expression je projette ce que je veux montrer dans la photographie finale. Je m'exprime dans la manipulation de mes modèles, je m'exprime par mes photographies. A travers mes portraits, j'essaye aussi de protester contre le terme de  "Freak - phénomène de foire" qui a une connotation très négative dans notre société. Selon moi, un "Freak - Phénomène" est quelqu'un qui entre très profondément dans un certain sujet, essayant de se perfectionner. Cela peut aller des théories philosophiques les plus profondes et leurs applications au rassemblement de bien matériel. À cause de son intérêt et son envie d’avancer, le "Freak - Phénomène" atteint une haute qualité de connaissance et de compétences. Il continuera jusqu’à ce qu'il ait atteint son objectif prédéfini, là ou un citoyen modèle laisserait tomber assez facilement. Je suis donc arrivée à la conclusion qu’être un "Freak - Phénomène" n’a que des points positifs! Gothique "Le Gothique" a une très grande influence sur ma vie et mon travail. La plus grande partie de mes photographies est dans ce style et surtout, les gens photographiés sont très proches voir même dans la scène gothique. Gothique  Puisque l’on me pose souvent la question : « Qu’est ce qu’un Gothique? » j’aimerais vous donner une réponse.  Il n'y a aucune définition pour le mot « gothique ». Gothique a sa propre signification pour chacun et il serait injuste de l'expliquer en un mot ou une phrase.   Etre "Gothique" est un style de vie, ou mieux : un mode de vie. Il y a beaucoup d’idées préconçues sur les gothiques, probablement parce que ce n'est pas bien connu et  que "les Goths" semblent souvent différents de l'homme "normal". Il y a même beaucoup de rumeurs concernant les gothiques : gothique est satanisme, gothique est vampirisme, ou encore mieux : gothique est SM! Bien sûr tout ceci est incorrect, la plupart des Goths sont les personnes, aux deux pieds sur terre … et ils n'aiment pas ces histoires enfantines. Beaucoup de personnes pensent que la mort et les vampires sont aussi associés aux gothiques. Et ce n'est pas si étrange : le vampire et les histoires d'horreur ont été créés au 18ème siècle, aux temps d'or des premiers gothiques. Ce qui va absolument au style gothique, c’est la couleur noire. Vous la trouvez principalement dans leurs vêtements, qui sont souvent très excentriques et élégants. Mais tous les Goths ne sont toujours parés de noir, il y a beaucoup de styles différents comme par exemple le  "glamgoth (la fascination - glamour) où l'utilisation de couleurs est très extrême. De nos jours, le "Gothisme" est devenu une mode, principalement à cause de la commercialisation du style pour les gens normaux. Chacun peut s’acheter un équipement gothique complet, juste au coin chez H&M. Autrefois le style de vêtements était une preuve de la créativité de l'individu. La plupart des vêtements étaient conçus et réalisés par soi-même. Maintenant il y a partout des magasins, spécialisés dans les vêtements gothiques et tous les accessoires imaginables. Quoique, à présent  les gens apprécient plus une personne portant une réalisation personnelle, Je veux dire par là, chacun peut "acheter" un costume mais il est tellement plus créatif de concevoir ses propres vêtements que de dépenser une énorme somme d'argent pour un vêtement préfabriqué. Comme vous pouvez le voir, le "gothique" est une chose très visuelle, les vêtements, les bijoux, les accessoires et le maquillage sont très importants dans l'image de la personne. De nos jours, la plus grande scène gothique peut être trouvée en Allemagne. Je prendrai pour exemple le gigantesque "Wave und Gotik Treffen", le plus grand festival Goth du monde, qui est organisé à Leipzig chaque année.

La construction des images Dans mes portraits vous trouverez des éléments visuels récurrents présents aussi bien dans le regard des modèles que dans les vêtements. Ci-dessous vous pourrez lire pourquoi ces éléments sont toujours présents dans mes photographies. Fascination pour le passé Le passé me fascine depuis mon enfance. L'Histoire me semblait toujours très romantique et j’ai toujours trouver malheureux qu’il  nous soit impossible de vivre et expérimenter ces autres époques. Le réalisme, souvent trouvé dans la photographie, n'a jamais été mon but. Je ne veux pas montrer la réalité, au contraire, j'essaye de montrer quelque chose de magique, quelque chose d'antan. Une chose qui vous fait penser, qui vous emporte au loin dans un autre monde, mon monde. Le non-moderne et non-réaliste sont dans toutes mes photos. Souvent celles-ci sont appelées "classiques", peut-être est-ce en partie vrai. C’est en partie vrai car elles ne montrent pas toujours des jeunes, passionnés d'histoire, d'anciens temps. Fascination pour les gens Les gens aiment regarder les autres, c’est un fait. Les gens aiment aussi regarder les images des autres … J’ai toujours trouvé un portrait photographique plus intéressant qu'autre chose. Un visage peut dire tellement, il peut vous mener à la réflexion, voir des histoires et des fantaisies derrière la substance de l'image. Combinaison entre aujourd’hui et le passé En regardant mes photographies, vous ne les appellerez pas "modernes", elles ne montrent pas l'image de la vraie réalité, qui est de ce temps. Elles montrent un choix de gens qui ne veulent pas être modernes. Paré de robes, inspirées de documents historiques, les modèles sont parfois en désaccord avec notre environnement moderne. Expression et pose C'est un point très fragile, un des facteurs dominant dans l’aboutissement ou l’échec d'une image. C'est là que je me demande ….Suis-je en train de faire un portrait de la personne devant moi, ou un portrait de moi-même dans le corps du modèle ? Une réponse est très claire, pour moi, maintenant : les portraits eux-mêmes posent une question au spectateur. Les yeux vous demandent, incertains, que fais-je ici et est ce que tout va bien, suis-je sûr de ce que je fais et bon sang qui suis-je !?!
