> With what Equipment do you work?
Generally I work with an oldfashioned reflex camera, it is the first camera I learned working with and I still prefer it above all new and flashy cams. My favourite objective is an 24mm lens, a so called wideangle. It allows me to come very close to my modells in order to make a very strange and personal portrait and in between it catches a big part of background. I dont work with a digital camera but I do scann all my negatives. Photoshop is a very important detail in the final picture.

> Some of your Pictures seem to be somekind of unplanned Shots - pics of the moment. Others seem to be planned, as if you had a vision in your head while you arrange them..
Mostly I have great ideas and big stories in my head, my fantasy is way to big to translate in a picture setting. I would build enormous fairytale landscapes to give my modells the perfect surrounding. *halas* this is not possible so I try to plan my shootings on locations, most fitting to my idea. If i plan something in advance it always turns out to something totally different. I plan perfectly the clothes and make up from my modells, all the rest comes by itself.

> Your colour pics, how do you compose them? The colours work perfect together..
This is my big aim. I want the colours to match. To reduce all colours not fitting in my idea and to boost specific colours to give expression. This idea started to work when I made a photoshooting in a lane full of bright pink japanese cherrytrees in full beauty of spring blossom. By the way, I like the colour pink (it's just as cool as black).

> Please name some photographers that you like ..
I like very much Erwin Olaf, a photographer from the Netherlands. He inspired me so much to go on with my photography studies. My docents didn't really like my style. They prefered gloomy magnum-reportages. Erwin Olaf encouraged me to go extreme and to go glossy!! That's a vision!!
Another very famous couple of artists I like are "Pierre & Gilles". They create some kind of stylish kitsch Art. Simplement fantastique!

> You love to take pics of very special people and very special places. Do you often travel?
yes, I can say that I am often abroad. I need to escape belgium from time to time. Belgium is a small dull place and the world seems so large and challenging to me. I've seen a big part of the world, but i like most very european countries, where you can buy simply new batteries in every little town and where you can walk on the street without the urgent need to be paranoia. I try to go every year at least one time to Great Brittain, it's a magic country. But for me there is also so much to discover in Germany.
I am always on the search for special people, goths are a very thankfull adience for me. But as you may notice on my reportage portaits from the WGT in Leipzig, it is not the excentric costume I am looking for, but for the exotic faces or expressive attitudes from these people. That's the thing what makes it interesting for me. I dont like the hype which is going on now... everybody is trying to be eyecatching. This "being eyecatching" is unfortunately done in a not such a stylish way anymore. The mentality seems to be: "do whatever you like, but make them look at you, even if you have to go and jump around naked with thousand bells around your legs..."

> If you could use a timemachine, where would you go for making photos?
definitely to the heavy rokoko times, trying to get in the middle of the upper classes intrigues. (that's why I travel every year to Venice during the Carnival)

> In the german goth scene of today fetish, SM and Black Metal are much more important than before. What do you think about this?
Well, my opinion about gothic is slightly different than the standard definition. For me "goth" is something cheerfull and happy, something "arty". I dont like it when gothic people accidentally have to face other goths, that they act like they disgust eachother. There seems to be a large portion of jealousy and arrogance in the scene, that worries me. I think Goth people are beautifull people. I always want them to be creative and wonderfull. That's why I like to photograph them. They have stories in their eyes.
Unfortunately I never really get to know these people deeply, qua character... or maybe this is just fortunately?
I have to say that I dont really fancy both SM or Black Metal. People easily make connections between gothic and SM...for me, personally, this are two different things. I would not like to be associated with SM. On the other hand I do appreciate some kinds of fetish, it can be cute.
A pitty is the phenomen that more and more people just dress less. Less is defenitely not sexier. *sigh* Tja me, with my rokoko fetish! I think it's thrilling to dress up, not to dress off.

Astan Interview, German Version:

Vor allem arbeite ich mit einer altmodische Reflexkamera, es ist die erste Kamera mit der ich fotografieren gelernt habe, und ich ziehe sie immer noch den neuen und glänzenden Plastikkameras vor. Mein liebstes Objektiv ist eine 24mm Lense, ein so genannter Weitwinkel. Damit komme ich ganz nah an meine Modele heran, um sehr bizarre und persönliche Porträts abzulichten und gleichzeitig fängt der Weitwinkel ein breites Stück Hintergrund ein.
Ich arbeite nicht mit eine digitalen Kamera, aber ich scanne jedes meines Negative ein. Photoshop ist ein sehr wichtiges Detail um den endgültigen Bild seinen letzten Schliff zu geben.

Meistens have ich tolle Ideen und unglaubliche Geschichten in meinen Kopf, meine Phantasie ist viel zu reichhaltig, um sie in einem Fotoset zu verwirklichen. Ich würde riesige Märchenlandchaften aufbauen, um meine Modellen in eine perfekte Umgebung zu setzen. Nur leider ist das nicht möglich, also versuche ich meine Shootings an Orten zu planen, die am besten zu meiner Idee passen.
Wenn ich etwas im Voraus plane, dann scheint es danach etwas total anderes zu werden. Ich stimme das Make-up und die Kleider perfekt aufeinander ab, der Rest kommst vanselbst.

Das ist mein wichtigstes Ziel. Ich will, dass die Farben optimal zu einander passen. Ich unterdrücke alle Farben des Bildes die nicht in meine Idee passen und hebe jene hervor, um den Ausdruck zu verstärken.
Diese Technik entsprang einem Fotoshooting, das ich unter blühenden japanischen Kirschbäumen im Frühling aufnahm. Seitdem habe ich mich in die Farbe Pink verliebt. (sie ist nicht weniger cool als Schwarz!)
4.
Ich mag besonderes Erwin Olaf, einen Fotograf aus den Niederlanden. Er gab mir viel Mut und Inspiration um mit meinem Fotostudium weiter zu machen. Meine Dozenten an der Uni mochten meinem Stil nicht. Sie standen mehr auf Schmerzvolle Magnum-Fotografie (Magnum is sehr realistischer Reportage Stil). Erwin Olaf ermutigte mich ins Extreme zu gehen und glansvolle Bilder zu machen.
Ein anderes berühmtes Künstlerpaar, das ich mag, sind "Pierre & Gilles". Sie entwerfen eine Art von Stilvollem Kitsch.
5.
Ja, ich kann sagen, dass ich oft im Ausland bin. Von Zeit zu Zeit muss ich einfach aus Belgien flüchten. Belgien ist ein kleiner, langweiliger Flecken, und die Welt scheint mir so groß und herausfordernd.
Ich habe einen großen Teil der Welt gesehen, aber ich mag am liebsten die Länder Europas, wo du ohne Probleme neue Batterien in jeder kleinen Stadt bekommen kannst und wo man auf der Straße laufen kann ohne sich plötzlich paranoïd zu fühlen.
Ich versuche jedes Jahr mindestens ein Mal nach Großbrittanien zu fahren, es ist ein verzaubertes Land.
Für mich gibt es aber auch viel in Deutschland zu entdecken.
Ich bin immer auf der Suche nach besonderen Leuten. Gothics sind ein sehr dankbares Publikum. An meinen Reportagefotos vom WGT hast du vielleicht gemerkt, dass es nicht die exzentrischen Kostüme sind nach denen ich suche, sondern ausdrucksvolle Gesichter und Gesten. Das macht es für mich interessant.
Ich mag nicht die neue Einstellung, das deder verscuht die Blicke auf sich zu ziehen. Die Lust auf jeden Fall aufzufallen wird leider in einer Weise vorgeführt die weniger Stilvoll ist als früher. Irgendwie scheint mir die Einstellung so: "Mach was du willst, aber pass auf, dass sie dich anschauen, selbst wenn du nackt mit tausend Glöckchen an den Beinen über den Festivalgrund hüppelst..."

Mit sicherheit im schweren Rokoko, beim versuch mitten in die Oberschicht und ihrem intriganten Lifestyle vorzudringen. (Das ist auch der Grund warum ich jedes Jahr zum Karneval nach Venedig fahre.)

Also, meine Meinung zur Gothic Szene ist doch ganz verschieden von der gewönlichen Auffassung. Für mich ist Goth-sein etwas Fröhliches und Inspirierendes, etwas Kunstvolles. Ich mag es nicht, wenn Gothics es als tragischen Unfall empfinden zich zu treffen, wenn sie so tun, als ob sie einander verabscheuen. Ich fürchte es gibt eine große Portion Eifersucht und Arroganz in der Szene. Ich glaube, Gruftis sind schöne Menschen. Ich wünschte mir am liebsten, dass sie immer kreativ und stilvoll wären. Die Leute, die ich fotografiere erzählen mir mit ihren Augen Geschichten.
Leider lerne ich diese Menschen selten tiefer kennen...oder vielleicht ist das gerade mein Glück?
Ich muss sagen, dass ich weder SM noch Black Metal anziehend finde. Die Leute schlagen gerne und leicht eine Brücke zwischen Gotik und SM... für mich aber sind das zwei verschiedene Dinge. Ich mag es nicht mit der SM-Szene identifiziert zu werden. Auf der andere Seite habe ich eine Vorliebe für eine Art von Fetisch, das kann durchaus niedlich sien.
Das Phänomen, dass mehr und mehr Leute sich immer weniger anziehen, finde ich sehr schade. Weniger ist definitiv nicht mehr sexy *seufz*. Tja, ich mit meinem Rokoko-Fetisch! Ich denke es ist viel spannender sich anzuziehen, als sich bloß auszuziehen.
